Knowing you need recovery and having a plan are different things. An 8-week burnout plan works because it gives you one focus per week, in an order that builds on itself. This post walks through the full sequence so you know exactly what to do each week — and what not to skip.

Weeks 1–2: Name where you are, then permit rest

Week 1 is mapping: write down your symptoms, your warning signs, your energy patterns, and what changed before the crash. Honest naming beats vague dread — a defined problem can be worked on.

Week 2 is permission: schedule real rest and defend it. This is the week high achievers want to skip ("I already know I should rest"), and it is the week that determines whether the rest of the plan works. Rest without guilt has to be practiced, not just understood.

Weeks 3–4: Calming routines and boundaries

Week 3 builds one or two daily settling practices: slow breathing, a short body scan from an audio script, a walk without inputs. Keep them small enough to do every day — consistency is the entire mechanism.

Week 4 turns to boundaries: after-hours availability, workload scope, recovery time. Use written scripts, rehearse them, and expect discomfort the first few times. Log which boundaries held each day; the log is your evidence that change is happening.

Weeks 5–6: Energy inventory and identity

Week 5 is the energy audit: track every task and interaction for drains versus sustains, then redesign your days around the results. Cut or shrink one real drain this week — something concrete, not theoretical.

Week 6 looks beyond work: roles, interests, and relationships that are yours regardless of your job. Reconnect with one neglected non-work identity — a hobby, a friendship, a project — and give it calendar space. This is your shock absorber for the next hard season.

Weeks 7–8: Re-engage and plan forward

Week 7 re-engages with work deliberately and on new terms: what stays, what changes, what you will do differently on your first overloaded week. Week 8 writes the forward plan: your personal warning signs, the routines you will keep, the boundaries that are now non-negotiable, and what to do if symptoms return.

Finish by writing a letter to your future overloaded self — short, kind, specific. You will be glad to have it.

Tips for actually finishing all 8 weeks

Pair the workbook with a weekly review slot (same time, 20 minutes), use the audio scripts to lower the activation energy of practice, and track small wins in writing — sleep, mood, boundaries held. If progress stalls for weeks, or symptoms are severe, bring in professional support; a workbook supports recovery, it does not replace care.
